Enygma Ventures: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs in Sub-Saharan Africa

Project Background
Enygma Ventures is an investment fund dedicated to supporting women entrepreneurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recognizing the unique challenges women face in accessing funding, the initiative aims to close the gender gap in entrepreneurship. The primary objective of this project was to create a fresh, compelling brand identity that resonates with both local cultural cues and the target audience.

My Role & Process
I was responsible for developing the new brand identity. My approach included:

  • Research: I explored Sub-Saharan African themes and visual cues while engaging in in-depth discussions with the founders and local contacts to understand the cultural impact of various design ideas.
  • Ideation & Sketching: I brainstormed workable concepts and sketched several ideas to capture the essence of the brand.
  • Digital Development: The best visual themes were then developed digitally, ensuring the final identity was both modern and culturally relevant.

Challenges & Solutions
A significant challenge arose with the initial idea for the logo, which featured a maze motif. Local feedback indicated that this design was negatively associated with witchcraft in the region. To overcome this, I pivoted to a new concept using a spearhead and diamond motif. This alternative design symbolized strength, “treasure,” and an upward trajectory—attributes that perfectly encapsulated the brand’s vision for female empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Outcomes & Impact
The revised brand identity was successfully launched alongside the company, enabling Enygma Ventures to provide essential finance and advisory services to female founders. To date, the initiative has helped launch over 10 female-led businesses that offer new products and services—boosting revenue and economic growth in the region. The design was kept simple and professional while subtly reflecting the cultural style and appealing to the target audience.

This project underscores the value of thorough research and iterative design. By listening to local insights and being willing to adapt initial concepts, we were able to craft an identity that not only met business objectives but also resonated deeply with its intended audience.
